It’s human history
The recent discovery of ancient caves in Mustang is fascinating. A group of archaeologists, historians, scientists and anthropologists from National Geographic and our own Department of Archaeology set out in 2008 on a mission to excavate the caves of Mustang. But this group not only found the remains of ancient caves, but human remains of about 3,000 years ago were also found. Skeletal structures buried under the surface of these caves were excavated. At first, it was just one. But as the research team found more caves, they found more remains to go along. What does this suggest, one might ask. That so many caves were excavated and that so many of them carried with them signs of ancient human life, means that a cave civilisation may have been present in the Mustang area of the country. This is big news as, till now, it was understood that civilisation in Nepal were offshoots of either the Indus Valley civilisations, or ancient Chinese civilisations.
The hypothesis that indeed Nepal may have housed a truly unique cave civilisation has been drawn out of a series of findings. For one, the caves show signs of a once-practised unique burial culture for the region. Similar to the idea of tombs in Ancient Egypt, the group of researchers found that when people passed away, they were buried in the recently-discovered caves, along with their most precious belongings. Second, thousands of pages of Buddhist scripts, scriptures, sculptures and manuscripts were found in the cave, signifying the practice of ancient Buddhism in the society. And third, which is most interesting; the caves were also used for residential purposes. While the areas of the caves used for burial and religious purposes were found to be small, those of the residential ones are ‘maze-like,’ with small entrances but big multiple rooms that stretch out like a maze once inside. While nothing can be drawn about the people that resided in these caves, it is clear that they had unique burial customs, practiced and ancient form of Buddhism and took a liking to precious metals and stones. In fact, until recently, it was fashionable among local Mustang residents and surrounding areas, to come treasure hunting in the caves, in search of the jewels and precious stones buried with the dead. But because these caves stand at a 90 degree able with the ground and are high-up and incredibly difficult to access, the treasure-hunting trend has seen a decline, but hasn’t stopped. Thus the entire area should be declared a conservation sight and protected.
But according to some of the researchers that took part in the excavation mission, even the country’s entire conservations budget would not suffice to do so. The researchers could however use some government-led initiative to conduct further research that could establish the existence of the cave settlement as a unique kind of civilisation. This would be a great contribution not only to a better understanding of human history, but it would mean that Nepal would also be known throughout the world for being home to a uniquely ancient civilisation and identity.
